According to a report by the Alzheimer’s Association, 83,494 Americans died as a result of Alzheimer’s disease and its related complications in 2010. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in Americans over the age of 65: in people over the age of 70 Alzheimer’s disease adds a 31% increase in the overall chances of mortality within ten years (a 61% chance of death within ten years in people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease as opposed to a 30% chance in people without it in the same age group). These statistics are particularly troubling when considered in the light that the medical field has not found a way to prevent or cure Alzheimer’s disease, and are only able to slow down the progression of the disease in very nominal ways. As the situation stands now a third of the American population will have Alzheimer’s disease or other form of dementia upon their passing.

As America’s population continues to age the number of people that are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia will increase at a corresponding rate, bringing with it an equal increase in the need for nursing home and assisted living care.
