CHICAGO – In a shocking turn of events, on September 29 , 2023, the Edgewater community awoke to distressing news. Three individuals were found unresponsive at the Judge Fisher Apartments, a well-known senior housing establishment located at 5821 North Broadway. Tragically, all three individuals passed away, with two of the victims pronounced dead at Weiss Memorial Hospital. The cause of their deaths remains a mystery, as there were no signs of fire, hazardous materials, violence, or carbon monoxide poisoning at the scene.
What the Police Report Reveals
According to the Chicago Police, the three adults, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as Linday Daly, 70, David L. Edwards, 53, and Royce Daugherty, 38, were all found in the same apartment unit. Area Three detectives are currently conducting a death investigation, though details remain sparse.
Both residents and onlookers have expressed their bewilderment, as the apartment complex has always been known for its tranquility and safety. For many residents, like Roberta Nunziato, who has lived in the building for over five years, the presence of numerous police cars and the unfolding tragedy was an unprecedented sight.
Understanding the Legal Implications
In the wake of such unexpected events, many questions arise about the safety and well-being of residents in senior living facilities.
Is this a case of nursing home neglect or abuse?
While the exact cause of death remains undetermined, it is crucial to ensure that senior living establishments adhere to the highest standards of safety and care for their residents. Any form of neglect or abuse, whether intentional or due to negligence, can have fatal consequences.
What would need to be proven in a nursing home neglect or abuse case?
For a valid nursing home neglect or abuse case, evidence would have to indicate that the facility failed in its duty of care towards its residents, leading directly or indirectly to harm or death. This could range from failing to maintain a safe environment, neglecting residents’ medical needs, or any form of maltreatment.
