Eye surgery is among the most difficult and delicate types of surgery available. There are a number of reasons why eye surgery may be required. Some of the most common eye problems that necessitate medical treatment are cataracts and myopia. Recently, a lawsuit was filed in Cook County against Retina Associates, Ltd., Elmhurst Outpatient Surgery Center, LLC, and a doctor claiming that negligent eye care led to serious injuries. The lawsuit is seeking damages of more than $50,000.

Intraocular Lens Implants

Intraocular lens implants, IOL, are lenses that are surgical replacements for eyesight loss caused by cataracts or due to myopia. The man in this case claims that the surgery was not performed properly and resulted in pain and permanent vision loss in his right eye. During IOL surgery the patient’s eye lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. The patient may require reading glasses after surgery, but the corrective lens necessary would be less obtrusive than they otherwise would be without surgery.

Advantages and Disadvantages of IOL Surgery

There may be both advantages and disadvantages to having IOL surgery performed. There are different types of replacement lens to choose from. The type that is best for you depends on the reasons for your eye surgery. In the man’s case, he states that the surgery did not adequately correct his problem and instead caused further pain and vision loss. Further, the man says that the doctor did not follow up on the surgery and therefore proper treatment was not rendered as it should have been.

Surgery Gone Wrong

The eye surgery in this instance was not properly performed and the man lost vision as a result. Surgical mistakes and medical errors are all too frequent an occurrence. When a problem does happen during eye surgery, the patient can end up with vision loss or eye pain, or both. The doctor should provide the patient with full information regarding the surgery. Not all conditions may be suitable for surgical treatment. The doctor in this case not only caused further injury to the patient, but also failed to provide adequate follow-up and after-care.

Negligent Medical Care

Negligent medical care is also known as medical malpractice. When a mistake is made or a doctor fails to provide proper care an injury may result. Serious injuries often require surgery and further medical treatment and rehabilitation. The victim of medical malpractice may file a claim to seek retribution for the expenses incurred because of the mistake. These expenses could include medical treatments, money for pain and suffering, and lost wages, along with legal fees and other costs.

The responsible party should pay for all costs caused by the negligent care provided. An attorney will assist with filing a lawsuit and negotiating with insurance companies and others to achieve the best possible results.
