Who are the Ombudsmen of Illinois?
The advocates and volunteers who work for the Illinois Long-Term Care Ombudsmen Program are crucial to protecting the well being of Illinois nursing home residents. These advocates defend and advocate for the rights of residents by looking into and resolving complaints against Illinois nursing homes for residents and families. The Ombudsmen act as a voice for residents and provide valuable information to help families advocate for them, including information on what services are available and how they can receive them.
When a resident does not have family or friends who can visit them on a regular basis, an ombudsman may also be the person who identifies problems, such as nursing home negligence. No matter the situation, the ombudsmen fight for quality care and respect for all residents living in nursing homes they serve. The ombudsmen can also report problems at nursing home facilities.
How did the Illinois Ombudsmen Program Start?
The Illinois Ombudsman program was mandated under the Federal Older Americans Act and the Illinois Act on Aging. Both of these statutes sought to improve the quality of life of people in nursing homes and long term care facilities. The program focuses on several areas to protect the rights of individuals in nursing homes. The first area is advocating improving quality of care and quality of life for patients in Illinois. The second area the program promotes is to encourage seniors to be advocates for themselves. The next area is serving as an investigative body for complaints and concerns of residents in nursing home. The organization also focuses on listening to the perspectives of individuals in nursing homes and maintaining their confidentiality.
What Services do the Ombudsmen do?
The ombudsman’s services are free and available to current nursing home residents, family members and friends. In addition to the services listed above, they also give advice to families who are considering long-term care for a loved one. If you have a loved one currently residing in an Illinois nursing home, or are looking into long-term care options for a family member, contact the Illinois Long-Term Care Ombudsmen Program by calling the Illinois Senior Helpline at 1-800-252-8966 or 217-524-6911 outside of Illinois. City specific Ombudsmen contact information is available through the state of Illinois Department of Aging. The contact for the city of Chicago is Bernard Cobbins and can be contacted at Bernard.robbins@cityofchicago.org

Testimonials
Not only were they so professional but also so caring and thoughtful. It was very difficult going over the facts in our mother's case but they were so compassionate and understanding and allowed us to be with them every step of the way. We were able to sit in on the depositions and we were really able to see how hard they worked on our behalf.
During that time, my family and I suffered the loss of my mother. Mr. Levin and Mr. Perconti were more than just our lawyers. Words can’t really express our gratitude.
They were most patient and responded timely to many questions throughout the entire process. All demonstrated professionalism and extensive knowledge of case and state laws. Their in-depth investigative work uncovered details which were unknown to us and yet sadly confirmed our suspicions. We would recommend the Levin and Perconti Law firm and especially this team.
During that time, my family and I suffered the loss of my mother. Mr. Levin and Mr. Peconti were more than just our lawyers. Words can’t really express our gratitude. My family and I will always be grateful for the compassion that they showed us. I want to thank you for what you did for my family, and for always being there for us.
Margaret’s representation, guidance, and professionalism gave us the sense that we could put our trust in Levin & Perconti and the final outcome proved that to be true.
