Congratulations to Levin & Perconti’s partners and associates selected to the 2020 Illinois Super Lawyers and Rising Stars lists for 2020. These honors are reserved for those legal professionals who exhibit excellence in practice and client relations. The annual lists are created under peer nomination, independent research, and peer evaluation. Super Lawyers are then graded on their overall professional achievement and client service. While up to five percent of the lawyers in Illinois are named to Super Lawyers, no more than 2.5 percent are named to the Rising Stars list.
Six Levin & Perconti Attorneys Honored as Super Lawyers
Levin & Perconti partners Steven Levin, John Perconti, Susan Novosad, Michael Bonamarte IV, Margaret Battersby Black, and intake attorney Steven Sandler have achieved the notable 2020 Illinois Super Lawyer title for their work representing clients in medical malpractice and personal injury cases, including nursing home abuse and neglect.
- Steven Levin, Founder and Senior Partner
Steven is known as one of the nation’s best trial attorneys. His peers and adversaries will tell you that his cross-examination skills rival those of the best litigators in the country and widely sought after to share his techniques and strategies in speaking roles at seminars. He remains a pioneer and mentor in the area of nursing home abuse and neglect law, and he is one of the first attorneys in the country to prosecute these types of cases on behalf of the elderly and their families.
Steven Levin has received this award every year since 2005. He was also named to the 2020 Illinois Super Lawyers Top 100 list.
- John Perconti, Founder and Senior Partner
John is a nationally recognized attorney and one of the country’s leading medical malpractice experts, with extensive experience in federal and state courts. His in-depth knowledge of complex medical issues has allowed him to achieve record-setting multimillion-dollar verdicts and settlements for his clients spanning a legal career of more than 35 years. John is also regarded as one of the leading nursing home negligence lawyers in Chicago for his work on behalf of victims of abuse and neglect.
John Perconti has earned his Super Lawyer designation 15 times, respectively, since 2005, and was also named to the 2020 Illinois Super Lawyers Top 100 list.
- Susan Novosad, Partner
Susan has a reputation for unmatched negotiating skills and her ability to help opposing parties resolve disputes in ways that deliver justice for her clients. The Levin & Perconti partner has been featured in Chicago Magazine’s Illinois: The Top 100 list, along with Illinois: The Top 50 Women list and named to the Bar Register of Preeminent Women Lawyers by Martindale-Hubbell® as well as honored among the WBAI’s Top Women Lawyers in Leadership. On multiple platforms, she continues to be recognized as an outstanding woman who serves in a leadership role, has excelled in her field and has gone beyond traditional mentoring to create new pathways for other women.
Susan Novosad is also a long-time Super Lawyer honoree, recognized ten times since 2005.
- Margaret Battersby Black, Partner
In 2019, Margaret Battersby Black sat first chair in more than 20 of Levin & Perconti’s 58 cases — the most by any lawyer, according to the 2019 Jury Verdict Reporter rankings. Margaret is an award-winning attorney who has also played a vital role in many nursing home and medical malpractice cases that made national news headlines and raised global awareness within the long-term care industry about chronic abuse and neglect by nursing home staff and facility ownership greed. She was also included on the 2018 List of Crain’s Custom Media’s Chicago’s Notable Women Lawyers and has been integral to the ongoing success of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association’s women’s caucus. Margaret is also committed to the advancement of women in the legal profession and serves as a mentor to law students and younger lawyers.
- Mike Bonamarte IV, Partner
Michael Bonamarte IV is a skilled and passionate attorney who has achieved outstanding results in a number of high-profile nursing home, wrongful death, medical malpractice, and personal injury cases. His commitment to his clients is rooted in a family legacy of love of the law and meaningful service to those in need, with a special respect and admiration for the elders that our society so often fails to honor. Mike currently serves as Chair of The American Association for Justice’s Nursing Home Litigation Group, and along with partner John Perconti, secured the firm’s top overall settlement last year: a $10.5 million win for the family of an elderly woman after her untimely death following a health system’s failure to diagnose and treat her lung cancer.
A special congratulations to Partners, Mike Bonamarte and Margaret Battersby Black, who are receiving the Super Lawyer distinction for the first time this year. Both were previously honored by the Super Lawyers Rising Stars program for early-career lawyers, multiple times
- Steven Sandler, Associate
Levin & Perconti’s intake attorney Steven Sandler handles the critical first steps of meeting with prospective clients to learn more about their current situation and to determine how our attorneys can best assist them. He has 40 years in practice across multiple areas of law and draws upon his experience to answer prospective clients’ questions as clearly and thoroughly as possible. Through his work, he has obtained $3.8 million for a steel mill employee who sustained second and third-degree burns over 80% of his body when a demolition crew ignited chemicals. He also negotiated a $3 million-dollar award for a surgical patient whose doctor failed to recognize her respiratory distress or resuscitate her during a routine surgical procedure.
Steven Sandler has been a recipient of this award since 2013.
