Is Social Media Addiction Common in Teens?

Video Transcript

Social media addiction is unfortunately really, really common in teens. The way I would summarize this issue is to think about it like this: Have you, as a parent, or have you ever heard a parent say, “Boy, I can’t wait till my son or daughter gets on social media”? No one says that. The reason why no one says that is because we’re terrified of it. We’ve heard horror stories of people being bullied, unfortunately committing suicide. It is a really, really scary thing, and I think there needs to be much, much stricter regulation.

There’s no protection for these kids other than the parents trying to do it on their own, and they need some help. What I refuse to believe is that these social media companies can’t take steps to regulate their product. Their product right now is dangerous to kids; it’s dangerous to teens. I have a 9-year-old daughter, and it terrifies me to think of what’s going to happen in a few years. There needs to be stricter regulation, and there needs to be accountability.
