What Are the Different Degrees of Cerebral Palsy?

Video Transcript

The way I would talk about cerebral palsy is that there are varying degrees of cerebral palsy. It’s a devastating neurological disorder and oftentimes it’s a result of a lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain that causes damage to the brain, usually before birth or at or around the time of birth. You see it have an impact on a person’s ability to talk, to walk, and to learn their cognitive function. I’ve represented people, for example, as recently as last year. Physically, you wouldn’t know that she has cerebral palsy, but cognitively, she was profoundly impacted, and we took that case to trial and received a really favorable result for her.

So, there are a lot of degrees of it, but the important thing to know is that it oftentimes results because the baby’s not gotten out quick enough, a C-section is not called in a timely manner, the heart rate tracings become concerning over too long a period of time, and the doctors or the nurses don’t act on that information.
