What Challenges Arise in Social Media Addiction Lawsuits?

Video Transcript

So right now, the biggest challenges, uh, with these types of lawsuits is a federal law called Section 230, and it may shield these companies from civil liability. There needs to be changes to that law, or we have to figure out a way to carve out exceptions because they’re not going to do it without the fear or the prospect of being held accountable for their actions. Sometimes, unfortunately, the prospect of litigation, the prospect of being held financially responsible for the harms that they’re causing, that’s what really causes change in certain industries, and that might be where we’re going. One of the goals for me and for our firm in talking about this is just to continue to keep the issue at the forefront of the news. I really commend what the Surgeon General has done, and I encourage people to call us. It’s in the early stages; we’re just exploring whether or not we can proceed with this type of litigation, but it’s something that I’m passionate about, something that I want to keep attention on both as a parent and as an attorney.
