What Is an Apgar Score?

Video Transcript

An Apgar score is a number used by the neonatal team after a baby is born to guide the resuscitative efforts. And what the score is it’s a, criteria of different items that are taken at 1 minute of life, 5 minutes of life, and 10 minutes of life, and longer if necessary. And the things that that number looks at is it looks at heart rate, color, tone, respiratory effort, and reflexes. And by assigning a score of either 0, 1, or 2, it lets the providers know how the baby is doing.
