What Types of Surgical Errors Are Most Common in Medical Malpractice Lawsuits?

Video Transcript

The most common type of surgical error that we see is a failure to monitor after surgery, and often this is a failure to monitor things like vital signs, mental status, to track bleeding, to track complaints, and to really be able to determine whether a patient’s complaints are just the normal kind of post-operative changes or pain or regaining of consciousness that accompanies all kinds of surgeries, or whether there’s something different. Another common surgical error that we see is that there are surgical instruments or foreign objects left behind by the medical providers during the surgery. If you believe that a medical provider has left behind a surgical instrument like a sponge or a device, then you definitely have a case.
